Active suspension pump re-build.

Active suspension pump re-build.

For those that dont know, the UZZ32 has an hydraulic fluid activated suspension, This is forced around the system and to the four shock absorbers by a pump, at the back of the Active pump is another pump bolted to it, this is the PAS pump, it is totally different to any of the other pumps on the 6 cylinder and V8's.

The Active pump works in a way that I cannot describe, other than to say the bit in the middle goes round and round and when its knackered it makes a bad 'groaning noise'.

I have had these apart twice before and am quite familiar with them now, I also have a few spare pumps laying about too.

I have a 1994 UZZ32 that Dave Howorth bought and the pump on this one was ok when I got it but got more and more noisy the longer I had it, I believe this was due to it being unused for so long.

I recently took the pump apart and replaced the bearings and the centrifugal pump, that to me looks like the only thing that could be making the noise.

here are the pictures.

==========================================

To remove the pump takes about 4/5 hours on the ramp, I dont see how you could do this without one unless you didnt have a day job .

Remove all the lower covers and steering rack complete, ( no easy task )

Jack the engine up and take the drivers side engine mount off, and I mean the mount bracket as well, get a piece of 2x2inch wood and jam it between the engine and the lower cross member to hold the engine up an inch or two.
struggle for a couple of hours removing all the bolts and power steering pipes, then try to get the thing out of the hole, ... good luck.

here is the pump,

You cannot see the size of it very well in that picture, here is one sitting in a BIG vice, with another sitting next to it, these are about 12 inches long and about 7/8 inches in diameter. Oh, and weigh a lot.

the pulley is off, sitting there to give you an idea where the internal pump sits.

This is the bit that does all the work, the small bearing you see is just a roller bearing for the orbital shaft on the pump. ( another on the other side, these I have always found to be good).

A few bits, try not to lose any of these, and if you do, try to have some spares handy.
==========================

The shiny part ( top right ) is the PAS pump this bolts to the back of the Active pump, and is filled with its own TQF, not the Active suspension fluid.

Here is the main bearing, this sits right at the front of the pump, this wasnt bad, but we changed it anyway.

THIS is the buggar that does all the work and makes all the noise, funny looking thing, imagine having to design and build such a thing.

These rods/tubes are pushed and pulled in and out of the pump housing and 'somehow' causes pressure that enables the fluid to do its thing.

( I know how it works, but I couldnt explain it in less than 5000 words
